Abstract of ORBIS Project
The particle-in-cell code ORB5 code [1] is a global gyrokinetic tokamak turbulence simulation code. It has been developed at CRPP and with major contributions from IPP Garching and Greifswald under a longstanding collaboration. It uses magnetic coordinates and fieldaligned Fourier filtering techniques. Non adiabatic trapped electron response is included [2]. Sources and noise-control algorithms have been implemented [3] that allow for true statistical steady state to be reached in long simulations. The ORB5 code is also linked to an ideal MHD equilibrium code and is able to treat any axisymmetric configuration with nested flux surfaces. Recently the code ORB5 has been extended to include self consistent perpendicular magnetic field perturbations. The present project focuses on the improvement of the algorithm for solving electromagnetic turbulence for ITER size problems. In addition, visualization tools for the 3D potential fields should be developed.
