Abstract of EUTERPE Project

EUTERPE is a global gyrokinetic code of the type particle-in-cell aimed at simulating turbulence in fully 3D stellarator geometries. It was created at the CRPP and afterwards developed at the Max Planck-IPP. It has been parallelized using MPI, its scaling has been studied up to 25000 processors and it has been ported to a number of different architectures. Several improvements are proposed for this code. Firstly, an optimization of several routines by means of the vectorization of operations is proposed. In this way, a relevant speedup is expected with a moderate effort. An improvement of the check-point/restart functionality is proposed that allow us to change the number of processors used in different restarts of a long simulation. This will make much more flexible the continuation of simulation jobs that is particularly important for very long simulations. Finally, we request support for the optimization of the matrix building process in the reduced MHD CKA code, a pre-run code necessary for the new MHD- gyro-kinetic hybrid model implemented in EUTERPE.
