Abstract of GENEOPT Project

GENE is a widely used gyrokinetic turbulence code which is physically comprehensive and well-benchmarked (see www.ipp.mpg.de/~fsj/gene). As far as general axisymmetric systems are concerned, it can presently use either a local (flux-tube) approach, an annulus approach, or a global (full-torus) approach. The goal of the present project is to optimize the new version of the gyrokinetic turbulence code GENE in terms of both parallel and single-core performance. This applies mostly to the recently developed global version of GENE. While many basic issues have already been addressed to some level, it can be expected that the code efficiency can be improved significantly beyond the present state by means of a systematic profiling and optimization of core parts of the code.
