Abstract of IMPGS2 Project

The GS2 software algorithm will be further improved to make maximum use of HPC-FF. GS2 is a time-dependent 5-D gyrokinetic fluid code extensively validated for fusion work and widely used on other HPC facilities for the simulation of plasma turbulence. Improvements identified as a result of studies by the HLST starting from work by Belli, will be made in a programme of work designed to accelerate GS2 execution and provide dynamic error estimates. These improvements will mean the code will be more efficient in its use of the HPC facility, reducing the number of calculations needed for checking accuracy, and enabling larger calculations both in terms of number of discretisation points and of volume of plasma modelled. This IMPGS2 project will lead to more accurate and reliable predictions of plasma turbulent behaviour, in particular transport properties, for devices such as JET, MAST and ITER.
