Abstract of ITM-IPS2 Project

To continue the evaluation of the Integrated Plasma Simulation (IPS) framework, implementing within it concurrent codes requiring significant numbers of cores.

Some of the integrated modelling workflows envisaged in the WP-CD (and by others, including ITER) require significant computing resources for at least some components of the workflow. The approach which was taken by within the ITM-TF framework involves running a workflow engine on the Gateway (Kepler) and having the HPC level modules initiated from this workflow (using Unicore). An alternative approach, pursued by some US groups, is to have a single large job running on the HPC resource with sub-components of this job implementing the various modules in the workflow.

This proposal asks the HLST to continue the work on implementing the infrastructure used by one of the leading USA groups ("IPS" framework) on IFERC and then evaluate it, in strict collaboration with key former ITM-TF developers.

The importance of this effort is increased because the ITM-TF preferred approach (using UNICORE) has not been available since the shut-down of HPC-FF, and there seems to be little chance of getting it running on HELIOS in the near future.
