EUROfusion

Abstract of CINCOMP5 Project

The explicit aim of the project is to provide support to EUROfusion scientists using the MARCONI-Fusion supercomputer at CINECA. At the beginning of next year, it is foreseen to replace the Intel Xeon Phi Knights Landing (KNL) large partition and the DAVIDE GPU-based test system by a new type of accelerator-based system. However, details of the new system are not at hand when writing this proposal. CINECA wants to inform about the new system in the EUROfusion Operation Committee 40 on October 30, which is after the deadline of this HLST call. Nevertheless, this proposal serves as a placeholder for the expected work on MARCONI-Fusion with a focus on the new partition coming up next year. From our experience with the introduction of new partitions of MARCONI-Fusion in the past, we know that both the hardware and the software have to be tested by a variety of benchmarks. Such benchmarks have been developed over the CINCOMP projects and are ready to be used. Nevertheless, it is very hard to predict how stable the new partition will be. Of course, this will have an impact on the work force been needed.
