Abstract of NEBC Project

The present application is fully embedded in the TSVV task focused on the development of the new European Boundary Code (EBC), which an essential tool to address one of most important issues faced by the fusion program, the dynamics of the fusion fuel in the tokamak boundary. The specific focus is on providing the EBC with an embedded kinetic solver for the neutral particles that is not affected by Monte Carlo noise. The project leverages the neutral solver that is now implemented in the GBS code based on the method of the characteristics, and targets to overcome the numerical issues that have limited its performance. We propose to optimize the construction of the matrix associated to this method and to improve the method for its inversion. This will allow us to consider multiple neutral species and parameter regimes that are of interest for detachment.
